AbstractAurora Flight Sciences
Jim Paduano

This 10-minute overview focuses on news & updates for some of Aurora’s larger programs, and a brief overview of activities in the area of space systems, which is an outgrowth of our acquisition of the company Payload Systems about 7 years ago. One of the biggest news items coming out of Aurora is that our Orion UAS broke the world endurance record, flying for 80 hours and landing with 1700 lbs of fuel. Another major development was that Aurora was awarded one of the DARPA Phase I ALIAS program awards, to create a robotic pilot assistant that can learn to support a pilot on any aircraft using the same interfaces a human uses. On the Space Systems side, the overview presented 3 ongoing programs at Aurora: (1) the Enhanced Dynamic Load Sensor (EDLS) which was designed, built and space qualified in Cambridge, and which Aurora will operationally support as it takes data on astronaut forces & moments during exercise; (2) The Cluster for Geolocation of Area Radio Signals (CGARS), a cubesat signal geolocation experiment that builds on DARPA F6 (fractionation) and microthruster technologies, and (3) the HALO expansion system, which will extend the life and utility of the SPHERES ‘indoor satellite’ facility on board the ISS.
