AbstractThis talk describes the DARPA Aircrew Labor In-Cockpit Automation System (ALIAS) program. ALIAS is motivated by the desire to introduce advanced autonomy and improve safety across a broad range of aircraft, in the face of pilot fatigue and situation awareness challenges. The approach is to create of a robotic co-pilot that is portable to any aircraft, can learn procedures and methods for a new aircraft in 30 days, is noninvasive, and interacts with the pilot through a familiar tablet-based application. Aurora's solution has been selected for Phase 2 development, after successful flight demonstrations in 2015. After describing the details of the program, this talk describes how Aurora's Centaur Optionally Piloted Vehicle provided technologies that jump-started testing of our version of ALIAS.
