AbstractJeb S. Orr, Ph.D. (Draper)

Timothy M. Barrows, Ph.D. (Draper)

A detailed survey is presented regarding modeling and test processes for the NASA Space Launch System (SLS) core stage RS-25 engine thrust vector control (TVC) actuation system. The relevant system changes that affect the integration of the Space Shuttle heritage TVC actuators into the SLS core stage is discussed, particularly the effects of structural dynamic coupling (servoelasticity) involving the core stage backup structure and global vehicle bending modes. The validation and prediction process relies on Draper's Multiple Actuator Stage Vectoring (MASV) model, a high-fidelity multi-DoF TVC dynamics formulation anchored with test data to be collected during the upcoming Core Stage Green Run (GR) frequency response test (FRT). The design of the test profiles, test instrumentation, and data processing is presented, which will be exercised on flight hardware in a full-thrust multiple-engine hot fire to support final certification of the TVC dynamics model for verification of flight control stability and performance.
