AbstractCurrent work discussed include work for the Japanese Aeronautical Research Agency, JAXA; a project to modify a UH-60L helicopter into a variable stability training aircraft for the Naval Test Pilot School; and recent VISTA F-16 and Learjet Test Management Projects (TMPs) at the USAF Test Pilot School.

The JAXA project is to support the Flight Demonstration of Quiet Technology to Reduce Noise for High Lift Configurations (FQUROH). This project consists of modifications to the flaps and landing gear for a JAXA Cessna Sovereign aircraft to suppress noise due to airflow. Calspan’s role is to design the flap edge fairings; design the instrumentation system; validate the structural modifications; quantify the stability and control effects; and plan the ground and flight tests.

Calspan’s modification of a UH-60 into a variable stability aircraft which was reported at the previous ACGSC meeting is nearly complete. This is the 4th VS helicopter developed by Calspan for the USNTPS with the previous ones being an H-46 and 2 SH-60Bs. In April the USNTPS staff will fly acceptance flights of the modified aircraft at the Niagara Falls Airport. From May to August, curriculum development flights will be flown at NAS Patuxent. Next year, the USNTPS expects to contract with Calspan to modify a second airframe into a variable stability training platform.

Recent Test Management Projects (TMPs) flown in the Learjets as well as VISTA F-16 in support of the USAF Test Pilot School were briefly described. A Learjet flight control evaluation project called Tacit Clear is an evaluation program of a Cessna/Textron flight control system for a future business jet. About 10 flights will be flown with the control system evaluated during formation flight as well as landings. A VISTA F-16 Test Management Project is an assessment of an adaptive dynamic inversion flight control system for hypersonic aircraft. This Hypersonic International Flight Research and Experimentation (HIFIRE) project is a joint project of AFRL and the Australian Defense Science and Technology Organization.
