AbstractThe presentation gives a brief overview of recent activities at the DLR. At the end of 2016 the German Government decided to expand DLR’s research areas by taking the decision to found new institutes that will perform research in the areas of data science, virtual aircraft development, maritime security and energy management. The detailed definition of the research focus is currently defined by different working groups.
Additionally, the presentation shortly describes three different projects ranging from an in-flight testing of an assistance system for wake vortex avoidance to a project that deals with the unmanned delivery of cargo.
The most recent flight test of the so-called Wake Encounter Avoidance & Advisory System (WEAA) was performed at the end of 2016 using the DLR research aircraft Airbus A320 ATRA and the Falcon 20 as test aircraft. The objective of the flight test campaign was to test the reliability of the wake vortex conflict detection algorithm as well as that of the algorithm for the determination of an optimal avoidance trajectory. For this reason over 50 wake vortex encounters were flown to test different parts of the WEAA. The system was operated on the ATRA A320, whereas the Falcon 20 was used as “wake vortex generator”. The flight tests showed that a reliable conflict detection based on ADS-B data was possible. However the decision algorithm for the determination of the avoidance trajectory still has to be improved.
In 2016 the DLR started the project ALAADy (Automated Low Altitude Air Delivery) dealing with the development of an aircraft configuration and an operational concept for the unmanned delivery of cargo. The main requirements for such an unmanned system are a range of approx. 600 km and payload of approx. 1000 kg. Currently, a large-scale demonstrator is equipped with actuators. In parallel to that a small-scale demonstrator is manufactured. One important task of this project is to focus on certification aspects based on “Specific Operation Risk Assessment” and on the integration of the unmanned cargo delivery system into the civil airspace.
Finally, in 2017, as part of a consortium, DLR was contracted to assess the impact of cybersecurity threats on commercial aircraft operations. For this reason a simulator study is planned on the DLR research simulator AVES in July 2017.
