AbstractIn future envisioned Naval operations, unmanned vehicle (UV) operators will manage the plans of multiple, autonomous, heterogeneous UVs to meet critical ISR needs. These operators will be supported by advanced planning systems, designed to generate and execute plans. While these automated systems can improve operator performance, they must be accompanied with intuitive displays that build situation awareness while avoiding information overload, and improve the operator’s interaction with the systems themselves. To address this need, Aptima and the University of Iowa have produced MiDAS (Mission Displays for Autonomous Systems); an operator interface designed to support and enhance revolutionary automation mission planning capabilities for UVs. The MiDAS information architecture rests upon an operator-centered representation of the mission domain, derived through extensive analyses with expert operators. The interface allows operators to examine automation-generated mission plans; understand changes to the mission and diagnose reasons for changes; and interact with automated planning systems to improve mission effectiveness.
