AbstractDLR is Germany's national research centre for aeronautics and space. Its extensive research and development work in aeronautics, space, transportation (including ground transportation) and energy is integrated into national and international cooperative ventures. DLR has currently about 6200 employees in 27 institutes at 14 sites. It performs basic research, develops novel technologies, builds and operates large-scale test facilities, assumes management tasks, and trains junior scientists.

In the DLR Aeronautics Directorate 13 DLR research institutes together with the flight operation department and the design office are structured and organized, all predominantly involved in aeronautics research activities. Research facilities like test aircraft, wind tunnels, simulators and large test rigs are in operation to support long term engineering research at a level of pre-industrial development. The associated research institutes are spread over whole Germany at 7 different sites. The primary goals of the aeronautics research are
- further development of civilian transport systems from the perspectives of efficiency/economy, safety and environmental compatibility
- providing technological contributions towards assuring the capability profile of the German armed forces

The management of the Aeronautics Directorate is responsible for the organization and supervision of four research areas which are
- Aircraft Research
- Rotorcraft Research
- Engine Research
- Air Traffic Management and Operation

Within the above research areas 61 research tasks and 49 research projects are carried out. The research tasks are characterised by more basic investigations while the projects are focussed on a very clear result following an agreed project plan defining precisely the schedule, resources, milestones and deliverables.
