AbstractThis presentation deals with FBW control technologies for commercial airplanes. A previous presentation on the subject made to the ACGSC by the presenter in Feb 2006 and the topics were recalled. The topics of the current presentation included 1) top level design objectives, 2) a review of control algorithm types and characteristics, 3) FBW control/design issues, including preferred control response, handling qualities, passive/active control inceptors, control inceptor sensitivity scheduling, envelope protection, 4) Current FAA FBW related research, 5) generalized vertical and lateral directional control algorithm design, including Static/Dynamic Inversion control . It was shown that Attitude and Flight Path Angle (FPA) based algorithms can be designed to exhibit identical response characteristics and that for direct FPA control, without using attitude as a high frequency innerloop, it is necessary to quicken the FPA display response to approximate the dynamics of pitch attitude. Various approaches to envelope protection were discussed and the capabilities of the TECS/THCS envelope protection with ultimate control authority sharing between vertical and lateral directional maneuvers were shown. This included zoom maneuvers with full vertical and lateral directional control inceptor deflections, whereby after the thrust control reaches its limit, all available kinetic energy margin to the airspeed limit boundary is converted to altitude as fast as is possible without violating the normal load factor and angle of attack limits, accomplished by effective energy and control authority management. Finally, slides were included to show how the same control strategies and capabilities are used to realize the TECS/THCS automatic control modes, as well as a new Energy Management Primary Flight Display that simplifies the pilot’s control and monitoring task eliminating the need to for a flight director function.
