AbstractAircraft research, development, and testing programs require high-fidelity simulations and aerodynamic models. However, updating simulation models to reflect observed behavior presents a number of serious challenges. As a result the simulation updating process can be ad hoc and labor intensive. Recent research has begun developing data-driven methods for automated and semi-automated updating of simulation databases, but this research does not address the unique challenges associated with updating tiltrotor simulations. The proposed research will develop automated methods that (a) perform data preprocessing to account for measurement noise and bias, (b) determine suitable complexity for a tiltrotor simulation model, (c) determine parameters for the model, and (d) blend the updates in the simulation. Furthermore, an integrated environment based on Barron Associates' AUSPEX toolbox will be extended to include rotorcraft specific techniques and a relational database to store and manage information relevant to the update process. To data progress has focuses on:
• algorithmic additions to the AUSPEX toolbox,
• the design of an architecture to host the simulation-update tools, and
• the design on a relational database.

The software architecture is modular and projected to interface with simulations of different structure. The relational database utilizes a Data Access Layer (DAL) to interface with a number of database clients based on the SQL syntax. An Object-Relational Mapping (ORM) layer is introduced to facilitate changes to the database and provide a consistent description of the data. This approach is adopted based on Barron Associates' experience with database modeling. Through this experience we have determined the need to completely model the data and its relationships in the software tool as well as the database to ensure that all user-interface components and computational routines can rely on a consistent, centrally defined data model. The addition of a DAL and ORM satisfy these objectives.
