AbstractAdaptive Control from the X-15 Era
By Mike Ruth
GN&C Tech Fellow at Orbital Sciences Corporation

The period from 1955 to 1965 was a very active time for adaptive flight control development, and for aircraft flight control in general. In this paper, the research climate for that era is described, along with details of adaptive control strategies for the X-15 vehicle and the US Navy STANDARD Missile 1 (SM-1). These two vehicles achieved a high degree of flight-condition adaptivity, but in very different ways. The SM-1 and X-15 adaptation approaches are described in this presentation, along with the legacy of these two programs for current aerospace control design and analysis.
