AbstractMitchell Aerospace Research Update
Dave Mitchell, formerly Technical Director for Hoh Aeronautics, Inc., (HAI) has formed a new small business, Mitchell Aerospace Research. In the past six months, the primary focus of this new business has been completion of old business: assisting HAI with the wrap-up of a Small Business Innovation Research Phase II.5 contract from the US Navy. HAI purchased a trailer-mounted display board that has been converted to a reference display for replication of hovering over the deck of a moving ship. We have been converting ship motion command files into equivalent vertical and lateral commands on the device, nicknamed PONG (Precision Optical Naval Guidance), in anticipation of flight evaluations in the next few months. PONG will provide a land-based system to assess handling qualities of maritime rotorcraft prior to deployment at sea. We hope to help the Navy establish a permanent rotorcraft test area at NAS Patuxent River, MD, with PONG as a centerpiece of the test course.
