AbstractNaval Air Systems Command – Shawn Donley

A top level review of major Navy aircraft acquisition programs was given. The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter has made significant progress during 2011 and is ahead of plan for flight testing. The Air Force F-35A variant has completed over 900 flight test hours at Edwards and the flight envelope has been opened to > 1.5M and > 7g’s. The Marine Corp F-35B STOVL variant, in particular, has made significant progress since the fall of 2010, with over 600 flight hours and 100 vertical landings accomplished. Initial sea trials aboard the USS Wasp are underway with numerous short takeoffs, vertical landings and ship compatibility test points completed. The F-35C Navy carrier variant has over 190 flight test hours and has completed initial land based catapult and arrested landing work at NAS Lakehurst and Patuxent River. Another major acquisition program is the CH-53K heavy lift helicopter for the Marine Corp. The fly-by-wire system is entering the system integration phase in the Sikorsky flight control integration lab. First flight is planned in January 2014. The P-8A Multi-Mission Maritime Aircraft, a derivative of the Boeing 727/800, has completed over 100 flights at Patuxent River. Initial Operational Test and Evaluation is planned in mid 2012. The Broad Area Maritime Surveillance aircraft, a derivative of the Global Hawk Block 20 and intended to operate as an adjunct to the P-8A, completed its Critical Design Review in February 2011 and should have its first flight in late spring 2012. The first of two X-47B Unmanned Combat Demonstrator aircraft has flown eight times so far, with the first flight in February 2011. The aircraft will arrive at Patuxent River in early 2012 to begin catapult and arrested landing testing, leading to tests aboard an aircraft carrier by October 2013. The objective of the program is to prove out the technologies for operating a highly autonomous large combat-capable aircraft aboard large deck carriers. In the helicopter UAV arena, the MQ-8B Fire Scout reconnaissance helicopter has successfully demonstrated interoperability with manned UH-60 aboard the Halyburton (FFG-40). Several Fire Scouts have seen operational use in Afghanistan as part of rapid response ISR task force. A study is underway to look at the feasibility of incorporating the Fire Scout avionics and flight control equipment in a Bell 407 provide extended range and endurance. NAVAIR is also working with several suppliers to field an unmanned cargo helicopter (external sling loads) for resupply of USMC forward operating bases in Afghanistan in order to circumvent the IED threats for ground based resupply. A team of Kaman and Lockheed is on track to field a government owned/contractor operated system based upon the Kaman K-MAX airframe in November 2011. This has been a fast track program under a Joint Urgent Operations Need statement.
