Abstract“Flight Investigation of Helicopter Low-Speed Response Characteristics”
David G. Mitchell, Roger H. Hoh, and J. Murray Morgan

In the early 1980’s, the US Army funded research into handling qualities requirements for military helicopters. The Government’s specification, MIL-H-8501A, was woefully out of date. With advanced technology in helicopter flight controls, avionics, and visionics, a new specification was needed. This paper documented one of the seminal flight research programs from the mid-80’s. Performed in Ottawa, Canada, using the Canadian National Research Council’s variable-stability Bell 205A helicopter, the research provided the basis for some of the fundamental dynamic response requirements in the Aeronautical Design Standard, ADS-33E-PRF. The paper was originally presented at an AIAA conference in Monterey, CA, as AIAA Paper No. 87-2285. Two years ago, it was selected as one of the “Most Influential Papers” of the 1980’s by the AIAA Atmospheric Flight Mechanics Technical Committee, and this version was presented in 2012 at a conference in Minneapolis, MN.
