AbstractPiloted Simulation of a Model-Predictive Automated Recovery System
James Liu, Jonathan Litt, Shane Sowers, Karl Owen, Ten-Huei Guo

This presentation describes a model-predictive automated recovery system (MPARS) for aircraft on the verge of a loss-of-control situation. The system determines when it must intervene to prevent an imminent accident resulting from a poor approach to landing. The altitude loss that would result from a go-around maneuver executed at present flight conditions is continuously calculated and monitored. If the loss is projected to violate a minimum allowable threshold, the aircraft flight and propulsion control commands are automatically manipulated to initiate the emergency maneuver. The system automatically deactivates once certain criteria are satisfied to allow safe landings. Piloted flight simulator evaluation of MPARS demonstrated effective protection against a variety of unsafe landing attempts.
