AbstractDLR - Flight Experiments
Fleet Overview and Recent Flight Research Projects

Oliver Brieger
Head of Flight Operations

The presentation gives an overview of the most recent projects currently conducted on DLR flight research vehicles. The high altitude long endurance research aircraft HALO has attained ‘mission ready’ status with all the major modifications completed, the respective STCs granted and the first long range missions successfully completed. On one of the turboprop Dornier 228 a digital autoflight system will be developed and integrated, allowing advanced 4-D navigation and surrogate UAV applications. For the rotary wing in-flight simulator ACT/FHS new control laws for an automatic transition to hover are being developed and are to be tested in the second half of 2014.

On DLR’s A320 testbed a test campaign is being prepared investigating nonlinear aerodynamics effects before, during and post stall for high lift configurations, measuring wing pressure distribution, wing deformation, flow transition and separation and facilitating airflow visualization by means of pressure belts, hot film, IR cameras and lasers. The gathered data will be used to enhance analytical methods to model aerodynamic effects in this extreme flight regime.
