MeetingACGS Committee Meeting 114 - Cleveland, Ohio - October 2014
Agenda Location5 4th Annual Dave Ward Memorial Lecture
5.1 Propellant-less guidance and control of spacecraft using neural networks forecasting and drag
TitlePropellant-less guidance and control of spacecraft using neural networks forecasting and drag
PresenterDr. Riccardo Bevilacqua
AffiliationUniversity of Florida

AbstractDifferentials in the atmospheric drag at Low Earth Orbits can be exploited for propellant-less relative maneuvering of satellite formations. The lecture will present drag-based control and guidance techniques for satellite relative motion using an adaptive Lyapunov strategy and neural network neutral density forecasting. High fidelity numerical simulations for various planar relative maneuvers will be presented to demonstrate the performances of the controller, and of the combined controller-forecasting tool.
The lecture will also present the PADDLES (Propellant-less Atmospheric Differential Drag LEO Satellite), envisioned as a completely autonomous 3-unit CubeSat capable of exploiting the atmosphere for maneuvering purposes, as well as measuring neutral density and predicting its dynamics.
Conclusions will give an overview of the ongoing and planned future activities.

Dr. Bevilacqua is an Associate Professor of the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department, at the University of Florida. He holds a M. Sc. in Aerospace Engineering (2002), and a Ph. D. in Applied Mathematics (2007), both from the University of Rome, "Sapienza", Italy. His research interests focus on spacecraft formation flight and space robotics. Dr. Bevilacqua is the recipient of two Young Investigator Awards, from AFOSR (2012) and ONR (2013).
