AbstractOne recent Calspan project was discussed – the Navy X-47B Probe and Drogue air refueling project. During this project a probe was fabricated and installed on the right side of the variable stability Learjet #2 nose. Structural enhancements were made to strengthen the Learjet nose. CFD analysis was performed to determine any changes to the airflow around the airplane. A structural check was done on a second probe taking it to the design ultimate load. The flight authority for this test program would not be assumed by the FAA so the US Navy became the safety of flight authority and the Lear was operated as a “public use” aircraft for this test program. Calspan’s general session talk discussed highlights of the risk mitigation plan prior to taking the airplane to the first manual air refueling plug. Content of this presentation was taken from a recent Society of Experimental Test Pilot’s talk on the topic by Calspan chief test pilot, Dave Culbertson.
