AbstractUnmanned aircraft have presented the world with a new avenue to approach flight operations. With the advancement of this technology, the test, evaluation, and analysis has been slow despite the rapid employment of this new type of aircraft. Minimal thought and attention has been put into determining the actual performance of these type of aircraft and ensuring there are the necessary airworthiness requirements to fly in National Airspace. This presentation will begin the process to evaluate what unmanned aircraft airworthiness criteria should encompass and start creating a database of flight test results to evaluate and validate any potential flying qualities criteria. A notional UAV model is described that has performance characteristics similar to operational UAVs of similar size and weight. The model used is a large unmanned aircraft with a wingspan of approximately 130 feet and a weight of approximately 32,500 pounds. After the model is validated, various maneuvers are selected for this UAV model to perform. In particular, the maneuvers are chosen from four categories: non-precision, non-aggressive (altitude and heading change); non-precision, aggressive (air-to-ground acquisition); precision, non-aggressive (precision offset landing); and precision, aggressive (pitch and roll discrete tracking). Each maneuver will be performed in the longitudinal axis only, then the lateral-directional axis, and then a third time without restricting the maneuver to a specific axis. During the maneuvers, typical manned fixed wing criteria from MIL-STD-1797 will be collected such as damping ratios, bandwidth frequencies, time delays, and time constants. Furthermore, new criteria from ADS-33-PRF will be reviewed including quickness, a ratio of peak rate to angle change. Comparing these different criteria will start the process of building a database which will lead to an initial roadmap for a UAV airworthiness criteria.
