AbstractTopics discussed during the Calspan 10-minute brief included the “Have Medusa” Learjet Test Management Project (TMP) at the Air Force Test Pilot School, the AFRL AVTAS Project, the VISTA structural and computer upgrade program, the latest variable stability helicopter for the Naval Test Pilot School, and the modification project of the Calspan Learjet Model 31A into a variable stability airplane to replace Learjet #1.

At the USAF TPS, there are typically 1 or 2 student conducted Test Management Projects conducted by each class. The most recent one was Have Medusa. This Fall 2018 project involved programming the Learjet with Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance algorithms designed with escape maneuvers suitable for larger non-tactical aircraft. The Learjet was variable stability system with programmed with the AGCAS algorithms and flights were accomplished to test the results.

An AFRL/RQQD project called AVTAS (Aerospace Vehicle Technology Assessment and Simulation) integrates multiple ground simulators with each other and with both the variable stability VISTA and Learjets.

The VISTA F-16 has been at Hill AFB for many months undergoing structural upgrades which will extend its service life for at least ten more years. During this period Calspan has been working on upgrading the airplanes computers and software.

Calspan recently received its 4th UH-60L Blackhawk helicopter for conversion to variable stability for the USN TPS.

Calspan has begun its effort to design the variable stability system modifications of its recently acquired Learjet Model 31A. Physical modification of the airplane will begin shortly. When complete in early 2020, it will replace the oldest variable stability Learjet 24-218.

Finally, the passing of Robert P. Harper was noted. Bob Harper was a long time Cornell Aeronautical Lab/Calspan engineering test pilot and co-author of the Cooper-Harper Rating Scale. He passed on 23 August 2018 at the age of 93.
