AbstractNASA is working with industry, academic, and government partners to develop and advance technologies which will enable a safer and more efficient air transportation system. This includes research in the area of aircraft engine model-based control and diagnostics which is being conducted under the NASA Aviation Safety and Security Program. The goals of model-based control and diagnostics are: 1) To accurately monitor engine gas-path health through the interpretation of available engine measurements; 2) To detect and isolate any faults which are present; and 3) If necessary, take fault accommodating control action. This presentation will provide and overview of model-based controls and diagnostics and the benefits which this technology can provide. Additional details will be presented on a contracted effort with General Electric titled “Model-Based Fault Tolerant Control,” ongoing under the NASA Aviation Safety and Security Program. This effort performs diagnostics by interpreting residuals between measured engine outputs and estimated engine outputs produced by an on-board (extended Kalman filter-based) model. Fault accommodation is performed via optimal changes in a set of suitable adjustments in the existing Full-Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) logic. These optimal adjustments are obtained through off-line optimization for recovery of engine component stall margins and thrust, and then interpolated online for the existing flight conditions. Simulation results of the model-based fault tolerant control logic applied to a high-bypass commercial aircraft engine will be presented.
