AbstractNASA went through a major transformation where the 6 Enterprises were reorganized into 4 Mission Directorates – Aeronautics Research, Exploration, Science and Space Operations. Glenn Research Center also went through a reorganization, however, the Research and Technology organization had very little change. The major change was that the Aeronautics and Space Directorates were combined into one Program and Projects Directorate and the Divisions under this new Directorate were aligned with the NASA structure of the Mission Directorates.

NASA is moving toward more competition in its technology projects which has had a negative impact on overall funding at GRC as well as the Controls and Dynamics Branch. We are able to continue a lot of our heritage work under Aeronautics Research – work on active control of components (combustion instability control, turbine clearance control, compression system flow control), and intelligent control and diagnostics for Aviation Safety and Security. It is not very clear what the situation will be for some of these efforts beyond FY05. The major setback we had was the discontinuation of our effort on Autonomous Propulsion System Technology. Although we do not have any FY05 funding for this effort, we hope to bring the effort to a good closure with fixed-based piloted simulation demonstration of control laws that adapt to slow degradation of the propulsion system with usage. We aggressively pursued opportunities for the internal and externally led competition for the Human and Robotic Technology element of the Exploration R&T program. We had mixed success in our efforts. Given the current vision/mission of NASA, it will be important for us to establish collaborative activities with industry and other organizations in the Human System R&T and the Nuclear System technology areas.

Two of the areas where we made significant technical progress are highlighted in this presentation. These are combustion instability control and Data Fusion for propulsion system health monitoring.
