AbstractOver the life of the program, 20 F/A-18 A-D aircraft have been lost to out-of-control flight. In 2000, the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) contracted with the Boeing Aircraft Company to upgrade the Flight Control Computer software of the F/A-18 A-D aircraft to improve departure resistance and recovery. The purpose of the program was to retrofit control laws developed for the F/A-18 E/F aircraft into the earlier model aircraft. The purpose of this presentation is to provide a overview of the control law architecture, describe some of the challenges associated with changing the control laws in a legacy aircraft, and to show examples of the results by showing back-to-back comparisons of old control laws.
