AbstractThe Atlas Launch Vehicle program approach to developing new variants of the Atlas Launch Vehicle System uses measured, evolutionary enhancements to increase launch vehicle performance capability, while reducing system complexity, and improving system reliability. Of equal importance to this low risk evolutionary approach is the Atlas Program's "one launch at a time" philosophy to address every launch as if it is a first of a kind event. This approach has resulted in a history of inaugural flight successes for the Atlas Launch Vehicle program, most recently demonstrated in the launch of the Atlas V 500 series launch vehicle, AV-003. The primary launch vehicle elements incorporated in the 500 series of launch vehicles were the Atlas V Solid Rocket Boosters (SRBs), manufactured by Aerojet in Sacramento, California, USA, as well as the 5.4 meter (m) diameter Payload Fairing (PLF), and associated Centaur Forward Load Reactor (CFLR), manufactured by Contraves Space AG, in Zurich, Switzerland. The successful Atlas V AV-003 launch occurred on 17 July 2003, at 2345 GMT (7:45 pm EDT). This presentation will briefly summarize the evolution of the Atlas Launch Vehicle system leading to the Atlas V 500 series of launch vehicles, discuss the preparations leading to launch readiness, and summarize the launch vehicle performance and payload environments experienced during flight.
