AbstractThe former Calspan, then Veridian, Flight and Aero Research operation in Buffalo was acquired by General Dynamics last August. Integration activities are on-going. Veridian is now a component of General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems based in Crystal City, Va. Flight and Aero Research which consists of the Transonic Wind Tunnel and in-flight simulator airplanes reports to a component of GD/AIS based in Dayton, Ohio.

Progress continues on the new Flight Research hangar at the Niagara Falls Airport. The steel structure of this new facility is complete and the roof and siding is being installed. We expect to occupy the new building, about 20 miles North of our current hangar, by mid summer 2004.

Discussion of 3 current technical projects:

We are providing technical assistance to Aermacchi for their M346 Advanced Military Trainer. Our assistance consists of Parameter Identification work on older flight data, review of their air data system, consultation regarding the programmable feature of their digital flight control system, and flight test engineering support.

We are also providing flight control system design assistance for ATG for their Javelin high performance personal jet. This 2-seat aircraft will have a wide flight envelope with a max speed of M=.92. Currently, the flight control system architecture consists of a mechanical control system, hydraulic boost in pitch and roll, pitch and yaw dampers, and mechanical gain changers.

The last project discussed is an upcoming flight test of an aspect of Automatic Aerial Refueling using the VISTA F-16 aircraft based at the AFTPS at Edwards AFB. This test project, which is a student managed Test Management Project, will consist of automatic rejoin of the VISTA with a virtual tanker aircraft. The flight path dynamics of the tanker will be generated on a ground station and data linked to VISTA using SADL. The autonomous aircraft control of the rejoin will be done using the variable stability system from an initial point 5 miles away from the virtual tanker to a poison 200 feet away from the tanker’s right wing. Ten test flights are planned for April 2004.
