AbstractNAVAIR flight controls is currently supporting 14 fixed wing platforms, 6 rotary wing platforms and 6 UAV platforms. These range from old mechanical flight control systems through the latest generation fly-by-wire systems. Supporting the older vehicles is becoming increasingly difficult as the generation of engineers who understand these systems retire.

A significant update to the F/A-18A/B/C/D flight control software is now in fleet service. This new software improves the high angle-of -attack maneuverability and departure resistance of the “old” Hornet. The EA-6B Prowler is getting an update to its old flight control electronics (stability augmentation and autopilot) to improve reliability. A similar technology update is in flight test now for the AH-1 and UH-1 helicopters.
