AbstractTopics discussed during the Calspan 10-minute brief included the modification of the Lear 31A into an in-flight simulator, the VISTA Depot maintenance and new paint scheme, and the Dynetics Gremlins Flight test using Lear #2.

Completion of the modifications of Lear #5 will be complete early next year. It is a newer Learjet model with more fuel-efficient engines, a glass cockpit, and a Flight Management System. The other VS Learjets are typically based as follows: Lear #1 is at NAs Patuxent, Lear #2 is at Niagara Falls, Lear #3 is at Edwards AFB, Lear #4 is in Europe.

VISTA recently returned from Depot Maintenance and structural upgrade at Hill AFB. It should now be able to operate for at least another 10 years. It was repainted so now has a color scheme consisting of flight test orange and dark blue rather than the previous red, white, and blue color scheme.

The Calspan Hotbench Lite, or “Learjet/VISTA in a Box”, has been provided to several of our flight test customers. With copies of the In-flight Simulator hotbenches at the customer locations such as AFRL, it allows for more rapid integration and preparation for flight test. It also reduces the duration of travel time needed for the customers to prepare and conduct a flight test program using Calspan’s in-flight simulators.

The Dynetics Gremlins Air Vehicle was implemented into Learjet #2. The open loop unaugmented airframe was simulated using the variable stability system. Actual Gremlins flight control hardware was installed on the Learjet to test the functionality of the outer loop control. Following calibration flights, the Learjet was flown in the MOA over Lake Ontario and was controlled using a ground station located near the Lake Ontario shoreline. The test program was successful and the next phase will take place this fall when the Learjet will be flown to NAS China Lake and outer loop control of the simulated Gremlins Air Vehicle will be flown to test rejoin and close trail formation with a transport aircraft.
