Abstract“Novel Visual Cueing for Highly Flexible Vehicles in Fixed Base Piloted Simulations”

Systems Technology, Inc. (STI) developed several visual cueing measures to alert the pilot to the presence of significant cockpit vibrations due to structural mode interactions in a fixed-base simulator environment. Two experienced test pilots participated in simulator sessions at STI to evaluate the visual cueing options. The cues were assessed using two well-used handling qualities demonstration maneuvers; discrete pitch and roll tracking and pitch sum-of-sines tracking. Pilot 1 only experienced the Cloud Fade cue, while Pilot 2 also experienced the HUD Reticle-Fill, and the HUD Fade cues. The cueing approach worked well with both pilots. Pilot 2 found that the Reticle Fill cue worked well, but its performance was enhanced when combined with the Cloud Fade cue. The HUD Fade cue was least effective. In conclusion, in the absence of motion cues, visual cueing can be used to effectively alert the pilot to increasing levels of acceleration at the pilot station due to structural mode interactions.
