AbstractHardware reusability is often proposed to reduce the cost of space systems. However, such systems are more difficult to develop than expendable systems as they pose an array of technical challenges. These barriers have led companies to adopt incremental approaches motivated by the agile methodology when developing reusable space systems. Unlike the traditional waterfall approach, the agile methodology advocates for quick iterations of designs where a “minimum viable product” is delivered after each iteration. This approach allows organizations to take a phased approach in the development of complex systems, where each iteration tackles a smaller technological challenge. Adopting an iterative approach for space systems development has several benefits. Chief among these is the lower cost and shorter time to an initial operating capability, which reduces the business risk associated with developing the system. Nevertheless, there are potential downsides to an iterative approach. Primary among these issues is the additional cost associated with developing incremental versions of a reusable system instead of just developing the final version. In this work, we investigate the implications of iterative development for reusable space systems to understand its utility for future developments.
