AbstractRapid development of highly integrated electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL) under the constraints of a competitive commercial startup environment requires a safety approach that is unique to this emerging space. Over the last two years Joby has matured a perspective unique to highly integrated eVTOL aircraft through the development of the Joby pre-production prototype aircraft. The team has developed training, simulation, off-aircraft testing, and safety processes that have allowed the company to retain the agility of a Silicon Valley startup while building the organizational infrastructure which will be the foundation for future certification flight test. The balance between piloted and remote flight test and between simulation and demonstration will be discussed. Failure Modes and Effects Testing (FMET) in simulation is a significant portion of the flight software development cycle and informs the conception of test hazards and mitigating limits. This work was incrementally validated with inflight failure accommodation through planned shutdown of key flight control effectors. This paper will discuss the methods used to streamline traditional aircraft software release cycles while balancing risk acceptance which enabled rapid investigation of key flying qualities and performance of the Joby preproduction aircraft.
