AbstractThe NADIR (New Air Data Monitoring) project, conducted under an EASA contract in collaboration with Airbus and academic partners, aims to enhance civil aviation safety by addressing complex air data probe failure scenarios. Building on advancements in Fly-By-Wire (FBW) technology, the project targets the detection, isolation, and resolution of multiple simultaneous sensor failures, a critical gap in current systems reliant on triplex schemes and consistency checks. NADIR explores advanced methodologies, including fault detection and isolation (FDI), parameter estimation, and data fusion techniques, leveraging both model-based and data-driven approaches. By developing robust, next-generation monitoring systems, the project seeks to improve certification standards, support novel aircraft designs, and provide new safety nets for extreme failure cases. Initial results demonstrate the feasibility of innovative solutions, such as backup airspeed estimation models and hybrid detection systems, signaling a step forward in aviation safety and reliability.
