AbstractHelene developed on Monday, September 23rd, 2024, moving northward into the Gulf of Mexico. After making landfall on Thursday, September 26th, 2024, it set eyes on the mountains of Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Unfortunately, this area already experienced a heavy rainfall event a few days prior, bringing 6 to 8 inches of rain before Helene’s arrival. This “double whammy” event posed as a worst-case scenario for the mountains, leading to widespread river and flash flooding, hundreds of fatalities, and damages in excess of a billion dollars. This type of event was not unknown to the area, as can be reflected by the 1916 (2 unnamed tropical systems), 2004 (Jeanne, Frances, Ivan), and 2021 (Fred) flooding events. However since over “5 Septembers” worth of rain fell in just a 4-day period, this became classified as a 1 in 1000 year flooding event, surpassing the previous three events. This presentation will provide a detailed description of the meteorological and climatological ingredients leading up to both the Predecessor Rainfall Event (PRE) and Helene in Western North Carolina. Reflections of the event, including aftermath and recovery efforts, will also be provided, as many members of the NOAA NCEI family were impacted by Helene.
