It should go without saying that the primary reason is the cost associated with each test point. Simply stated, handling qualities flight testing is expensive, so the most must be made of the opportunity. A well conceived flight test plan and highly motivated test pilots are required to maximize chances for a successful program. This, however, may not be enough. In flight test, an emphasis is often placed on lessons learned. In this way, lessons from the past are applied to insure success in the future. While in the midst of a flight test program, the lessons learned must be first recognized and then applied literally “on-the-fly.” To exemplify this process, a recent handling qualities flight test program that, in the end, resulted in a successful evaluation of a new pilot-vehicle system loss of control alleviation concept is used. | |
