AbstractThe purpose and historical genesis of the Flying Qualities (FQ) Flight Test Continuation Criteria (FTCC) used successfully in the Joint Strike Fighter Program Short Takeoff and Vertical Landing (STOVL) flight testing of Concept Demonstrator Aircraft (X-32B, X-35B), and System Design and Development Aircraft (F-35B BF-1), are discussed. Previous STOVL fighter / attack aircraft flight test envelope expansion philosophy is discussed. A description of the Integrated Flight Propulsion Control (IFPC) of the F-35B aircraft in STOVL mode is included. An overview of the F-35B FQ robustness analysis and piloted simulation is included, which was used to set many of the FQ FTCC thresholds for initial F-35B BF-1 STOVL mode envelope expansion. A description is given of the FQ FTCC used during the unique modes of F-35B flight (Conventional Takeoff and Landing (CTOL), CTOL with STOVL doors open, and STOVL), including the rationale for focusing on specific parameters during control room monitoring during specific modes of flight and specific maneuvers. A summary of F-35B FQ flight test results to date, including the contribution of the FQ FTCC on ensuring a safe and efficient envelope expansion process during F-35B Initial Transitions flight testing is included.
