AbstractThe slides summarize a fun small contract we have been working on for NASA Dryden – making an airplane fly like a helicopter. Adaptive controls designers have asked a simple question: in the event of impairment of a primary control surface, how much interaxis coupling can the pilot tolerate? This is important if the adaptive system is tasked with redistributing command among the remaining surfaces in an attempt to recover to as near normal operation as possible. The contract started in 2006 with plans for a very brief flight experiment on the NASA F-15. Then it was moved to the F-18, and now it’s a student project at the US Air Force Test Pilot School. Simple coupling techniques are employed to get a measure of the limits of tolerable coupling in a HUD tracking task. Requirements from the Army’s rotorcraft handling qualities specification ADS-33E-PRF have been used as a starting point for this research.
