AbstractHeliSAS – Development and Certification of a Stability Augmentation System and Autopilot for Light Helicopters.
HeliSAS was developed to fill the need for a low-cost, lightweight, SAS/AP for light helicopters. These helicopters are highly unstable, which results in high pilot workload. As a result, the safety record for these helicopters is poor when compared to fixed wing aircraft. This paper describes the methodology used to augment the stability of light helicopters while keeping weight and cost low by the use of a parallel implementation for the SAS. The impact of current FAA regulations on the high cost of certification of a SAS for a helicopter vs. a fixed-wing aircraft is discussed.
