AbstractRecent activities at Calspan include the following projects:
• Navy SBIR Phase 1 & 2 Unmanned Operation of Fly-by-wire Testbed Aircraft
• Learjet – Navy Automated Aerial Refueling

The NAWC-WD Phase 1 SBIR N09-038 was sponsored by the JSF program. The purpose of the project was to develop an OPV (Optionally Piloted Vehicle) from an existing FBW aircraft for use as a test bed aircraft to support Avionics and Weapon System development. Calspan received the Phase 2 for this SBIR to develop and build prototype OPV system, Airborne, Datalink and Ground Station utilizing an F-16C aircraft presently supporting NAWC-WD from Mojave CA. A manned flight demonstration is planned for 2012.

Leveraging two successful flight test programs performed for Northrop Grumman Corporation (NGC), the Calspan Flight Research Group is currently in the middle of conducting a third Navy-related Automated Aerial Refueling (AAR) program, this time directly for the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR). NAVAIR, with prime NGC, is developing the Navy Unmanned Combat Aircraft System (N-UCAS) X-47B. The aircraft will be equipped for AAR to enable long range transit and extended time on station without the need to land and refuel. The N-UCAS will use the probe and drogue refueling technique in addition to the boom & receptacle system used by the Air Force.

Calspan’s Variable Stability Lear #2 is being used as a surrogate N-UCAS and is equipped with an Inertial Navigation System (INS), Global Positioning System (GPS), Infrared (IR) cameras, and datalinks. The Learjet is performing rendezvous and station keeping maneuvers behind an actual airborne tanker, an Omega Boeing 707, trailing a hose and drogue in the Misty Military Operating Area (MOA) over Lake Ontario. This flight test session will be followed by subsequent sessions for NAVAIR in 2011 and 2012.
