AbstractCurrent work discussed include the acquisition of a GIII Gulfstream test bed airplane to perform airborne systems testing. In addition, Calspan will soon acquire a 5th Learjet Model 25 airplane to turn into an in-flight simulator next year. The main focus of the Calspan General Session talk was about the FAA Fly-By-Wire Handling Qualities Research Project. This was a ground based simulator evaluation project using the Calspan fixed based Genesis engineering simulator. A generic transport aircraft was implemented and design issues such as artificial feel system characteristics, envelope protection algorithms, command gain variations, and non-linear flight control system design elements were evaluated in the ground simulator. The report is not yet complete but some preliminary observations were discussed.
