AbstractSupport work with NAVAIR has continued, though flying qualities work on the V-22 Osprey has decreased over the past six months. This is considered to be a good thing: after over a decade of constant efforts to improve its flying qualities, the V-22 program is stabilizing. Most of the recent focus has been more on flight mechanics issues (formation flight, conversion to Airplane Mode) that are generally outside the scope of flying qualities.

At the same time, the NAVAIR work on the CH-53K heavy lift helicopter has been ramping up as we near first flight. A multi-week piloted handling qualities simulation identified some areas for further investigation, and attention has turned to operation in so-called Direct Mode: all augmentation turned off, with the exception of low-gain washed-out rate feedback. This will be the configuration for first flight, so as NAVAIR prepares a flight clearance, more work will be done, including several piloted simulations to evaluate the helicopter’s airworthiness in low-speed flight.

A contract has been signed to provide lectures at the International Test Pilot School in Canada. The first series of lectures, presented over a two-week period in September, covered advanced control laws and handling qualities. Each lecture consisted of between two and four hours of morning academics, followed by afternoon piloted simulation sessions to demonstrate the concepts.

Work for the Air Force Test Pilot School will continue under a new five-year contract. This work will include the ongoing series of lectures on feedback, flying qualities, and handling qualities evaluation, and will be expanded to cover dedicated Test Management Projects to generate new data for future modifications to the military flying qualities specifications. A revised structures and aeroservoelastics course is under preparation through a separate contract; a subcontractor, Bill Norton, is the primary contributor for that course.
