AbstractCurrent work discussed include development of the fourth variable stability Learjet; a project to modify a UH-60L helicopter into a variable stability training aircraft for the Naval Test Pilot School; and recent VISTA F-16 and Learjet Test Management Projects (TMPs) at the USAF Test Pilot School. Modification of the fourth VS Learjet, a late model LR Model 25D, was started in May 2013. First flight of the aircraft following extensive flight control modifications took place on March 25, 2015. After a brief flight test program to validate and calibrate the programmable flight control system, the aircraft deployed to Europe in mid-April in order to support European test pilot school customers. While in Europe, Calspan successfully supported the Empire Test Pilot School in England, the EPNER Test Pilot School in France, and the Test flight Academy of South Africa, where flying took place in Spain.
A recent contract award for Calspan was for development of a variable stability UH-60L helicopter as a training platform for the US Naval Test Pilot School. This is the 4th VS helicopter developed by Calspan for the USNTPS with the previous ones being an H-46 and 2 SH-60Bs. This project will leverage technology developed during these previous projects as well as recent developments for upgrades of the variable stability systems in the Learjet fleet and the VISTA NF-16D.
Recent Test Management Projects (TMPs) flown in the Learjets as well as VISTA F-16 in support of the USAF Test Pilot School were briefly described. These projects include a Learjet project to test Heavy Aircraft Auto Ground Collision Avoidance System; a Learjet L1 Adaptive Controller flight control evaluation; remote pilot flying of the Learjet to support the TPS UAS syllabus; a Learjet Brain Wave monitoring data collection flight test project; a VISTA F-16 Autonomous Wingman project; and a VISTA Integrated Collision Avoidance System project.
