AbstractTopics discussed during the Calspan 10-minute brief included the Navy ATARI flight test project, VISTA and Learjet Test Management Projects at the USAFTPS, modification of a second Gulfstream III, and the new Calspan Crash Test facility.

The ATARI project was flown as a proof-of-concept test to determine if Landing Signal Officers (LSOs) could correct glide path and line up errors for an airplane during the final portion of a carrier approach. The Learjet #2 was modified so that a flight path input could be injected into the variable stability system from the LSOs station. Numerous mirror approaches were flown to Niagara Falls Runway 28R during which intentional lateral and glideslope errors were made. The LSO then corrected these errors and the airplane continued toward a 20’ low approach. The proof of concept was successful and this project will be followed by further refinement and testing of the concept by the Navy.

At the USAFTPS, they have added a new 6’ directional dish data link to support continued work using the VS Learjet and the VISTA F-16 in which the aircraft are controlled from the ground control station at the schoolhouse building. The Have Vapor TMP is ongoing. It is focused on validation and prediction of off-nominal robustness for adaptive controllers.

Calspan has acquired a second GIII testbed and it is currently undergoing modification to add a centerline pylon which will be able to carry a 2,500 lb external store. This airplane will fly in combination with the first GIII both carrying pods for an upcoming flight test project.

Finally, the new automotive crash test facility being built at Calspan was briefed. This facility will be for our passive safety crash test business which has been one of our areas of testing for 40+ years. The old facility has an outdoor track which makes the vehicles visible to the public from nearby hotels. It also has an old technology tow system which is not as accurate as desired. The new facility will be all indoor in a climate controlled environment and highly secure. There will be two vehicle preparation areas with access control systems so that two OEMs can be present concurrently and not have access to the others’ vehicle. The tow system will be a closed loop cable system running underground on the return run with highly accurate speed control. The new facility will be operational in September 2017.
