AbstractThe presentation gives an overview of recent and ongoing projects at DLR. In Jan. 2018 DLR conducted a joint campaign together with NASA Armstrong exploring the effects of synthetic fuels with respect to emissions and contrail generation. DLR’s research Airbus A320 was burning different mixtures of synthetic fuels while NASA’s DC-8 was penetrating the exhaust plume, analyzing the chemical composition with onboard instrumentation from NASA and DLR. Currently, a flight test campaign is ongoing for which the vertical stabilizer on DLR’s research A320 has been highly modified, incorporating active and passive boundary layer control to enhance laminar flow, shifting the transition point from laminar to turbulent flow further downstream. In the LNAS-Project (Low Noise Augmentation System) a display is provided to the pilot, which helps him/her optimize the descend and approach trajectory based on the energy state of the aircraft by giving cues when to change the aircraft configuration or energy state to reduce the noise footprint on the ground. Finally, DLR is developing a high fidelity simulation as basis for the development of future automatic AAR CLAW-schemes, which includes near and far flow field aero modelling, hose and basket dynamics, drogue/ hose aerodynamic interaction, displays and GNC aspects.
