AbstractThe Mechanical & Aero Department at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, newly established in January, 1999, continues to grow. Last September, we were joined by Dr. Stephen Tragesser, who will complement our faculty consisting now of six tenured or tenure-track faculty and one instructor. In addition, the department is in the process of hiring an
additional instructor, and hopes to complete this hiring process prior to the end of this Fall term.

Dr. Tragesser was previously assistant professor in the department of aerospace engineering at AFIT, and received his PhD from Purdue's department of aeronautics and astronautics. His specialty is dynamics and control, with particular emphasis on astrodynamics and astronautics.

The other faculty with interests in dynamics and control are Dr. Peter Gorder, from UC Davis, and formally on the faculty at Kansas State. Peter's focus is in rotorcraft and air traffic systems; Dr. Ken Saunders, out of the University of Michigan, was formerly on the faculties of RPI and then Penn State. Ken's focus is on mechanical engineering systems, robotics, and manufacturing; and Dr. Dave Schmidt, who has interests in all aspects of aerospace vehicle dynamics, guidance, and control.

A news item of possible interest is a recent agreement executed between the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and the U.S. Air Force Space Command. The agreement launches a university consortium, currently referred to as the National Space University initiative, aimed at developing programs to educate the large and growing cadre of space professionals in the Air Force. The consortium initially includes Johns Hopkins, George Washington University, the University of North Dakota, and the University of Colorado (Boulder and Colorado Springs campuses). CU Colorado Springs will serve as the lead organization for the consortium. The agreement was executed on October 6 on the Colorado Springs campus. The event involved Gen Lance Lord (Four Star), Commander of Space Command; Betsy Hoffman, President of the CU system; Lieutenant Governor Jane Norton, and representatives from Senator Allard's and Congressman Hefley's offices, among others. The MAE department will be especially involved in activities associated with this initiative.
