AbstractHAI recently completed two Small Business Innovation Research contracts for NASA: HeliSAS, an autopilot for small light helicopters; and ROVER a real-time oscillation verifier for detection of PIO.

New research, scheduled to begin soon, will be directed toward development of an Army Airworthiness Design Standard (ADS) for validation of military helicopter simulators. HAI developed ADS-33, the Army’s helicopter flying qualities specification, and the simulation ADS is expected to be of similar scope. Currently, V&V for most military simulators is based on the FAA Advisory Circulars, AC-120-63 for helicopters and AC-120-40B for airplanes. These documents are not comprehensive and are oriented toward unaugmented or lightly augmented aircraft. An area of particular focus will be definition of frequency-domain criteria for V&V of math model, visual system, and motion system. Frequency domain envelopes developed in the 70's for equivalent systems have become relatively common, but these envelopes are extremely stringent for motion system criteria, especially compared to Sinacori’s motion criteria.

HAI continues to support helicopter flying qualities efforts for the Army-NASA branch at Ames Research Center. We are assisting with assessments of advanced FCS designs for the CH-47, and will soon complete work on a flight test guide for ADS-33. Work is expected to begin soon on a maritime addendum for ADS-33, sponsored by the Navy and with cooperation from Canada, Great Britain, and Australia.
