AbstractThis presentation begins with a historical overview of Parker Aerospace contributions in electric actuation technology. Development programs involving safety-critical applications of EMA and EHA are covered including J/IST, Joint Strike Fighter (JSF), and others. The current industry state of the art is described, along with trends in still-evolving electric actuation requirements. As our industry takes the final steps toward pure electromechanical flight control, the remaining technical challenges are discussed: Fail-operative/fail-safe capability, tolerance to mechanical jams and opens, centering after failure, testability, thermal considerations, reliability, durability, and weight. The presentation concludes with recommendations of areas where risk reduction is still needed.
