AbstractJohn Weyrauch presented seven current areas of research at the Rockwell Collins Advanced Technology Center.
1. Synthetic – Enhanced Vision: A $2M USAF/NASA/Collins contract to develop and flight test display formats for integrated enhanced (includes dual band infra red and millimeter wave radar) and synthetic vision including data-linked weather, traffic, and threat information.
2. NASA Small Aircraft Transportation System: Collins is working with the South-East SATS Lab to develop and demonstrate a low cost enhanced vision sensor (infra red and low light level visible CCD) for general aviation applications. In another SATS effort, Collins is developing an airborne approach to conflict detection and resolution (CD&R) and is developing a plan to flight test this CD&R approach.
3. NASA Methods and Tools for Flight Critical Systems: The Methods and Tools for Flight Critical Systems project focuses on the development of the engineering infrastructure needed to design the avionics system of the future. Funded jointly by the NASA Langley Research Center and Rockwell Collins, it emphasizes the early development and analysis of system models. Later life-cycle activities, such as coding and unit testing, are replaced by the automated generation of code and test cases from these models.
4. FAA Gulf of Mexico Surveillance: A contract awarded by FAA Safe Flight 21 Office. The program is designed to outfit commercial aircraft flying over the Gulf of Mexico with ADS-B squitter transponders (1090 MHz Extended Squitter on upgraded TPR-901) and collect data. The program will result in preferred routing over the Gulf of Mexico for Continental Airlines aircraft that will save time and fuel. The FAA will take information to the Joint Resources Council (JRC) in Sept 2003 for the FAA ADS-B ground system with expectation that equipage will begin in 2006.
5. Spinning Projectile GPS: Collins has developed and patented a suite of new GPS technologies addressing the special needs of spinning and rotating vehicles such as artillery shells, missiles, and satellites. This novel approach utilizes amplitude and phase modulation of the GPS signal to track vehicle roll angle. Collins recently demonstrated rotation tracking from 100 to 250 revolutions per second on a high-speed spin fixture.
6. Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) Integration for Field Trials: The US Displays Consortium recently awarded a research contract to Rockwell Collins with General Dynamics Canada as a major subcontractor to demonstrate and validate OLED display technology for application to US military systems.
7. Video Latency in Complex Display Systems: The US Display Consortium recently awarded a research contract to Rockwell Collins with the University of Iowa as a major subcontractor to develop human factors system requirements and a human factors experimental description for video latency in future complex display systems.
