AbstractThe on-orbit assembly of the massive International Space Station was a significant flight control design challenge, where the massive structure and low-frequency structural dynamics pushed the Shuttle Space control capability well beyond existing flight experience. Starting with the Shuttle docking with the Russian MIR space station, this presentation highlights a few of the control system challenges, along with some real-time operational surprises, associated with the early flights to assemble the Space Station.

Presenter Bio: Mr. Hall has a BS in Aerospace Engineering from Mississippi State and a MS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Houston. He has worked Space Vehicle GN&C on NASA projects for over 30 years, and was the Space Shuttle flight control design lead for the first 17 or so flights to assemble the Space Station. He currently is the Deputy Lead Engineer for the GNC design for the Space Launch System, which is NASA’s next generation launch vehicle.
