AbstractCalspan’s 10-minute brief will cover:
• Lear VSS modification status
• Learjet VSS UAS Surrogacy work for AFRL and DARPA
• Test Management Projects at the Air Force Test Pilot School
• NF-16D VISTA update and legacy

Calspan continues its effort to integrate the updated variable stability system modifications on its recently acquired Learjet Model 31A, designated “Lear 5.” When complete in mid-2020, it will replace Lear 1, the oldest variable stability Learjet 24-218. Calspan will retire Lear 1 on 11 DEC 2019.

Commercial customers competing for USAF contracts have taken advantage of the Lear VSS capability to act as a UAS Surrogate. Like other DoD services and government agencies, AFRL and DARPA are exploring how to operate multiple UAVs by a single pilot. In some cases the Remote Pilot (RP) is also airborne, operating in a formation with the UAVs. In other cases, the RP can be flying a simulator. Finally, Artificial Intelligence algorithms may be directing the actions of the UAS. VSS Learjets have supported all of these scenarios.

USAF TPS, student classes typically conduct 1 or 2 Test Management Projects. The most recent TMP using the NF-16D VISTA is Have Hasta La Vista, which is ongoing. The TMP is intended to add guidance for the AAR task to MIL-STD 1797. Another recent VISTA F-16 TMP was named DEATH CLAW, intended to improve air-to-air gun system lethality. The Learjet TMP “HAVE MEDUSA”, conducted in autumn 2018, was a follow-on to HAVE ESCAPE. This project involved programming the Learjet with Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance algorithms designed with escape maneuvers suitable for larger non-tactical aircraft.

Finally, the Air Force’s recently announced another aircraft and pilot save by AUTO GCAS, developed using the VISTA VSS. With eight aircraft and nine pilots’ lives saved by the system, the program recently earned the 2018 Collier Trophy for programmatic excellence.
