AbstractTopics discussed include the Learjet in-flight simulation project of the Turkish Aerospace Hurjet, several upcoming Gulfstream testbed projects, and the sale of Calspan Corporation.

The Hurjet is a light attack/trainer aircraft being developed by TAI. They contracted with Calspan Corporation to conduct an inflight simulation project as a risk reduction measure and to have their test pilots gain confidence in the handling characteristics of the Hurjet. Six different flight conditions were simulated – 3 in the landing condition and 3 in the cruise configuration. A partial model following simulation method was used in which pitch rate was accurately matched in the longitudinal axis and roll rate and yaw rate were matched in the lateral/directional axes. Nine evaluation flights were conducted in which Head Down Display tracking tasks were conducted as well as lateral offset landings.

Upcoming Gulfstream 3 airborne testbed projects include a project for the Space Development Agency (SDA) to test the use of a laser to communicate with satellites; a Navy advanced aerial refueling store project, an MQ-25 aerial refueling project utilizing the Gulfstream as well as our Learjet fitted with a refueling probe; and an autonomous teaming project utilizing two of our Gulfstream testbeds as well as military assets.

Finally, the sale of Calspan Corporation to Transdigm was announced. Transdigm is a $6B annual revenue company traded in the New York Stock Exchange. They hold approximately 46 aerospace companies that function independently. Calspan will retain its name, staff, and management, but will now be owned by a large company with resources to allow Calspan to grow in the testing arena through acquisition and be investment in additional test assets.
