AbstractDynamical equations governing the motion of various aerospace multibody mechanical systems have been derived in order to facilitate engineering analysis and design in a number of NASA endeavors. These include International Space Station attitude dynamics and control; gravity-gradient stabilized spacecraft aided by passive magnetic dampers; combined attitude control, momentum management, and energy storage for a spacecraft; a concept for a tether-enhanced gravity tractor for asteroid deflection; a two-parachute system undergoing scissor-mode motion; tilt-rotor aircraft; attitude motion of two docked spacecraft conducting on-orbit refueling; and touchdown stability of a lander in which propellant is sloshing. In all of these cases, Kane's method has been employed to derive the dynamical equations of motion. A brief introduction to the method is given, and comparisons are made to seven other classical methods.
