AbstractThe Draper Wearable Kinematic System (WKS), a light-weight, small-size, vision-based navigation system, was invited to participate in the NASA Joint EVA Test Team (JETT) field test 3 as a technology demonstrator. The JETT series of tests is designed to prove out the operations and technologies needed for future crewed Lunar traverses. The conditions of the are designed to emulate Lunar conditions as best as possible on the Earth. The tests were performed in a desert environment during the nighttime. A powerful low angle light was used to simulate the solar conditions near the Lunar South Pole, with the only other lighting being test subject-worn, backpack mounted personal lighting. These unique lighting conditions present novel challenges for vision-based navigation algorithms. Here we present the navigation results and lessons learned for both the JETT3 test campaign and supplemental nighttime testing.
